Switching your DNS records without downtime

One of the big worries when transferring your website to a new provider is "Downtime".

Downtime only typically happens if things are done in the wrong order or done incorrectly by those who don't know what they are doing.

When transferring a website to a new provider, there should be no downtime at all.

Step one: Place your hosting/transfer order with us

The first thing you will need is our clustered name servers, to-hand. You'll receive these once your web hosting order has been processed.

Your "Hosting Account Details" email will also provide our clustered DNS name servers.

Once your domain name transfer has begun, it will have absolutely no impact or effect on your website at all, and cause no downtime whatsoever.

A Change of registrar does not cause any changes to the DNS records or downtime.

If you have a third party managing your domain name transfer, to us, they will need to know how to modify DNS records, and when.

If you'd like to switch to a fantastic UK Web Hosting company and want us to take care of the transfer, please let us know.

All international domains (.com/.net/.biz, etc.) are auto-renewed upon transfer; a 1-year renewal charge is incurred upon transfer.

For UK Domains, change your TAG ASAP to our TAG as found here: WESH UK TAG

For international domains, you will need to approve the transfer of your domain name either by email or via the current provider's website.

Step Two: Prepare your website for the DNS switchover

This is where you need to upload your website to our servers, set up any necessary mailboxes, and upload the databases.

This ensures that when the DNS records are switched over, nobody will notice, and your website will then load from our servers, instead of your old host.

Step Three: Change your name servers.

Once your website is uploaded and tested, it's now safe to change your DNS records to point the world at our servers. The best time to do this is during your website's quietest part of the week. This will vary from one business to another, depending on the website's purpose.

Once done, you can confirm the traffic arrival using many of the statistics applications in your cPanel control panel.

We can assist you or do the entire migration for you if needed. Just drop us in a support ticket with all the details of your existing provider and any website login details.
